It states that, last year eighteen hundred people needed treatment at the local Accident and Emergency department due to mishaps involving a bbq. But I am having trouble reconciling the figures.

For instance, it says that 800 were due to a scald or burn, 200 had contrived to cut themselves in some way. And what, you may ask, of the other 800 people? Alas, despite the large part of the total there is no clue. What they did to themselves and how doesn’t seem worth recording.

Here’s another. Of the 1800, 1400 had been at home, and the other three hundred in a public place. Do you spot something? The other 100 must have been damaged in a separate dimension where nowhere is either private or public but everybody gets together for a barbeque and once in a while someone gets hurt and they need to take a trip to Earth for treatment. Do they have such things as a Weber bbq in this mystical place or do they make their own? I’d like to know.

I know trees can burn a bit, what with being made of wood and all!

However, sarcasm aside, RoSPA do great and worthy work, though I reckon much of it is probably pretty non-taxing when it comes to thinking up guidelines, but as long as there is a lack of commonsense the temptation to tut and wag fingers will always be with us.

Following A Long Wait We’ve Been Able To Get The Finishing Ingredient And Now To Get Our New Kitchen Installed

At last! Fanfare and unfurl the flags, last weekend we purchased a range cooker. We were originally trying to get it in the early spring so as to coincide with the installation of the kitchen. It all went wrong thanks to the British banking institutions, even though the one in question has a Spanish name.

It looks as if the Spanish are much more accustomed to bbq grills than closing the accounts of former account holders and transferring the balance to a holding account managed by the estate. This is sadly too much for them, such a terribly complicated process the poor banker charged with the job presumably had to be sent on a training course for several weeks because it took more than 7 weeks. In that time we lost the window we needed to buy the range with enough time for it to be delivered in time to be installed in the new kitchen.

So we went to the range specialists in Wolverhampton on Saturday and made the day of the sales lady by telling her exactly what make, model, size, colour and fuel source we were after. She said she generally has to work for a long time to help customers find the right cooker for them but we were sold in about 5 seconds. But naturally it could not possibly be that straightforward could it? No. In going to put in the order on the Stoves site she wasn’t able find the model anywhere and I went outside to do some swearing at the banks because if they’d have managed their work in time we could have had the one we wanted. Fortunately, on my return the problem had been identified as an error on the site and we could have exactly what we wanted. The relief was palpable to all I think because to do all the research again would have been awful and I may have lost patience and just insisted that we just get a bbq fitted and have done with it.

But come the first week of October, the fitters will be coming and all will be well. I am hopeful that the decent weather will stick around long enough so that we can throw a proper opening party combining the new unit, kitchen and the bbq grills we bought at the start of the summer. By then we will also have charcoal grills of some sort as we are having a jaunt down to the beach on the bank holiday and we will have to have one for lunch.

There’s not much I love as much than a bbq with mates, getting the food arranged and getting the bevies in. But I do wonder why it is that it is always the man of the house who does the grilling? It can’t just be down to of the fumes blowing up off the charcoal grills and the heat isn’t arduous so why? My missus is a superb cook, but nothing would make her to stand there and turn the steaks and ribs. Anyway, it seems that we have to depend on the weather if we are going to have a party this year and hope that the meteorological gods will look favourably on us. We could do with a bit of luck.
